REMOVE
MONEY data file clean-up Utility
For Money version 2.0 and above
Everyone makes a mistake once and a while when entering
data into an application. Either you mis-spelled the
stockname, or you entered the wrong date, wrong price, wrong
market index, wrong whatever. Whatever you did wrong this
utility can be used to remove the faulty data so that you can
go back into MONEY and re-enter the correct information.
NOTE: This utility works by erasing complete records.
It cannot erase individual fields within a record. In
other words, if you by a new stock but enter the wrong
price the only way to correct that mistake is by removing
that record from the portfolio and transaction data files
and entering all the information in correctly. WARNING:
By making these kind of changes may affect what the actual
portfolio and stock returns are which means that the market
data file will also be incorrect. IN OTHER WORDS, changes
made to one data file will affect all the data files.
HOW TO RUN REMOVE.COM:
1) You can start the program in one of two ways:
a: Command line - Enter
REMOVE [drive:][pathname]Datafilename
b: The Other Way - Enter
REMOVE
Then at the prompt enter the Datafilename.
2) What will happens next depends on the file extension
that you gave the filename.
If it ended with TDF then the program will tell you
how many records are present in that file. Then it will ask
you to enter the number of the record that you want erased.
Most of the file SHOULD be in alphabetically sorted order.
If the file does not appear to be sorted then the records
will be in the same order that they were originally entered
in, with the most recently added transactions toward the end
of the file. You'll have judge for yourself where the faulty
record is located within the file. Enter a record number and
the program will display the Stock Name and Date that
corresponds to that record number. Then press Y to
erase or N to skip that record. Then press Y to continue
or N to quit. Alternatively, you can quit by entering a
record number that is higher than the number of records in
the file. When you quit the file is repacked to remove
the empty spaces created by the erased records.
If the file extension was MDF the program works very
much like before. You enter the record number of the entry
that you want erased.
If the file extension was PDF the program does
basically the same thing. The only difference is that
instead of entering a record number you will be entering a
stock name. If the stock name is not in the file, or you
mispelled the name, you will receive an error message and be
given the chance to either try again or to exit the program.
